GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

JESUS CHRIST WAS NO ORDINARY MAN. He is Son of God as well as Son of Man.

Jesus is our Saviour, our Redeemer. Listen ot Him.

Read His Words in the gospels, and obey them.

They will help you to find the peace that Jesus brings.

Through obedience to the Commandments, and the Words of Jesus, prepare for eternal life in heaven.

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

Today we relive the events of Good Friday. In this service, we remember and honour Jesus Christ the Son of God, Who came to earth to save humankind from sin. We can never thank the Lord enough for all He has done for us. Let us remember Him with honour and dignity in this worship service.

WELCOME

We pray for all in the world. We remember those who have gone before, and those who suffer now. We pray for God's Grace to bless our world. We pray for an end to all wars. We thank God for all His Help to us.

GOOD FRIDAY READING

The gospel readings take us step by step through the final hours of Jesus' earthly life, revealing a Love that holds nothing back.

At the Last Supper, Jesus gathered with His disciples and shared bread and wine, giving them the gift of the Eucharist - His Body and Blood - so that His Presence would remain with them always. The Saviour spoke of love, service and faithfulness, even as He knew that one of them would betray Him.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed in deep anguish. Fully human in His Fear, yet fully trusting, Christ surrendered Himself to the Father's Will. While His disciples slept, Jesus prepared Himself for what was to come.

Soon after, Judas betrayed Him with a kiss, and Jesus was arrested. The disciples scattered in fear for their lives. Peter, who loved Jesus deeply, thrice denied knowing Him before the night was over.

Jesus was taken before religious leaders, and then the Roman governor. In these trials, He was questioned, mocked, and falsely accused, yet He responded with quiet dignity. Though no true fault was found in Him, the crowd called for His death. The verdict was given - Jesus was to be crucified.

Jesus walked the road to Calvary, carrying His cross. As He weakened, Roman soldiers pressed Simon of Cyrene into service to help the Master carry the cross.

At the Place of the Skull - Golgotha - Jesus was crucified by being nailed to a cross. From the cross, Jesus forgave, comforted, and entrusted His Spirit to the Father.

The death of Jesus is not the end, but the fullest expression of sacrificial love for all humankind.

Finally, His Body was taken down from the cross, and laid in a tomb which Joseph of Arimathea provided. Nicodemus helped with spices for the burial.

Good Friday is a time of sorrow and waiting, as the Body of Jesus was sealed in silence within a burial place. There is also  the benison of hope, as God's Promise was to be fulfilled on Easter Sunday.

WORDS OF COMFORT

Just so is it in our lives. The darkest hour always comes before the dawn. Sometimes we may be spat upon, either metaphorically or literally. We may experience forms of rejection which hurt emotionally and spiritually.

We may lose loved ones in death. We may experience injustice, war, civil unrest, robbery, attacks on peace of mind and other trials.

Yet the death of Jesus negates all these sad instances. Nothing can have seemed more final that for the tomb to be sealed with a certified dead Body inside. The Heart of Christ was pierced after death, so there was absolutely no chance that He was alive when placed in the tomb.

For all that, death was not to win. Satan was not to overcome. Hatred would not overpower. Torture would not reign. Blasphemy would not last. Jeering and mockery would not prevail. Christ lay in the tomb, and on the third day He was raised from the dead.

As we remember these events, we draw comfort from the fact that we were rescued from the clutch of satan, and from the power of death. We have been given the promise of eternal life, and a future free from sadness, pain, aging and death.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for all You have done for us.

You surely are the Pride of humankind, the Beauty  of our peoples, the Crown of our Church, the Rock of our Community, the Hope of our souls, the Rescuer of our lives.

Let us learn to love and care for others in the same way You care about us.

This is the best way we can show our love, respect and gratitude for what You have done for us.

SILENCE

Spend some time in silence. Let us remember our brothers and sisters throughout the world. Let us pray for an end to wars. Let us pray for all.

COMMUNION

Go in peace from this blessed service to love and serve the LORD. Spend as much time in prayer this sacred time, as you wish.

During this time let us pray for all, especially for those most in need.
