CHRIST, MAKE OUR LIVES FRAGRANT WITH THE PERFUME OF SANCTITY

Make Our Lives Fragrant with the Perfume of Sanctity

A Sermon on Holiness, Love, and the Fragrance of Christ

Scripture Reading:

“We are the sweet aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”  2 Corinthians 2:15

Fragrance of a Holy Life

There are fragrances that linger long after the person who wore them has departed. A beautiful perfume may fill a room, leaving behind a delicate fragrance that recalls the presence of someone who has passed through it. In a similar way, a holy life leaves behind a spiritual fragrance that continues to touch the hearts of others, even when its influence is no longer immediately visible.

As Christians, we are called to ask Christ to make our lives fragrant with the perfume of sanctity. We are invited to become living witnesses to His goodness, so that those who encounter us may perceive something of His Love and His Gentleness. The perfume of Christ lingers in His Purity, and His Peace.

This fragrance does not come from outward appearances or eloquent words. Nor does it come from public displays of devotion. It arises from the hidden work of grace within the soul. It is the fragrance of a heart transformed by Christ, a will surrendered to God. It is the perfume of a life increasingly conformed to the Holiness of our Lord.

The question we must ask ourselves is this: When people encounter us, do they experience something of the fragrance of Christ?

Do our words bring consolation? Does our conduct inspire trust? Does our patience soften the hearts of those who are troubled? Does our charity reveal the presence of a Love greater than our own?

We cannot manufacture the perfume of sanctity by human effort alone. We must turn to Christ, the Source of all holiness, and allow Him to transform us from within.

Christ, the Source of All Holiness

Our Lord Jesus Christ is the perfect Image of the Holiness of God. His life was an offering of Love to the Father and a gift of Mercy to humankind. In the Master, Divine Holiness became visible through human tenderness and compassion. Divine Holiness breathed from obedience and sacrifice.

When Jesus touched the leper, welcomed sinners, forgave His persecutors, and received the little children, He revealed that holiness is not a distant or cold perfection. It is the radiance of Divine Love entering the circumstances of ordinary human life.

To become holy is to become more like Christ.

We therefore pray: Lord Jesus, purify our hearts of everything that prevents Your Love from shining through us. Remove the bitterness that makes our words harsh. Remove the pride that makes us unwilling to listen. Remove the selfishness that closes our hands to those in need, and the resentment that prevents us from forgiving.

Let Your Grace penetrate the hidden places of our souls. Where there is impatience, cultivate gentleness. Where there is envy, cultivate gratitude. Where there is fear, strengthen faith. Where there is indifference, kindle the fire of charity.

The perfume of sanctity is the fragrance of Christ Himself, communicated through lives that have been surrendered to His transforming Grace.

Fragrance of Charity

Saint Paul teaches us that we are called to be the sweet aroma of Christ in the world. This means that our Christian faith must become perceptible in the way we treat others.

A person may speak eloquently about God, yet fail to reveal His Love through daily conduct. Another may speak very little about religion, yet demonstrate extraordinary compassion through quiet acts of generosity and service.

The fragrance of sanctity is often most evident in the smallest things: a patient response to an irritating remark, a kind word offered to someone who feels forgotten. The perfume of holiness shows through a willingness to help without expecting recognition, or a sincere prayer for someone who has caused us pain.

These acts may seem insignificant, but nothing offered to God in love is insignificant.

When we serve those who cannot repay us, we reflect the Generosity of Christ. When we forgive those who have wronged us, we imitate His Mercy. When we treat every person with dignity, regardless of status or advantage, we bear witness to the Love of God.

Let us ask ourselves whether our homes, workplaces, parishes, and communities have become more peaceful because we are present in them.

Do we leave behind encouragement or discouragement? Reconciliation or division? Hope or despair?

May Christ teach us to leave behind the fragrance of charity wherever His Providence leads us.

Fragrance of humility and hidden holiness

The perfume of sanctity does not require public recognition. Indeed, some of the holiest lives are lived almost entirely beyond the notice of the world.

A mother caring patiently for her family, a worker performing honest labour, an elderly person offering daily prayers, a sick person uniting suffering with Christ, or someone quietly assisting a neighbour may be cultivating a holiness more precious than worldly achievements.

God sees what human eyes overlook.

Our Lord teaches us not to perform good works merely to receive the praise of others. True holiness seeks the Glory of God, rather than the admiration of the world.

Pride seeks to draw attention to itself; humility allows the goodness of Christ to become visible.

The saints did not become holy because they were without weakness or struggle. They became holy by repeatedly turning towards God, accepting His grace, repenting of their sins, and persevering in love.

We, too, must be willing to let Christ purify our intentions. Our religious practices must be animated by love. Prayer should lead us towards greater charity. Devotion should strengthen our obedience to God. Our desire for holiness should make us more compassionate rather than more judgmental.

Let us not ask merely to appear holy. Let us ask for the grace to become holy.

The Cross: the perfume of sacrificial Love

There is a profound connection between sanctity and sacrifice.

In the Gospel according to Saint John, Mary of Bethany anoints the feet of Jesus with costly perfume and wipes them with her hair. The fragrance fills the house (John 12:1-8).

This beautiful act of devotion offers us a spiritual image of a life poured out in love. The perfume is not kept in its container; it is released through an offering.

So, too, our love becomes fruitful, when we are willing to give ourselves for others.

The fragrance of Christ may become especially evident when life is difficult. It can be seen in the patience of someone enduring illness, and in the faithfulness of a person carrying heavy responsibilities. The perfume of the Saviour may be seen in the courage of someone who continues to do what is right despite opposition, and in the forgiveness offered when resentment would seem easier.

Christian holiness does not mean that suffering ceases to hurt. Nor does it require us to pretend that injustice is acceptable. Rather, it means that even in suffering, we seek the Strength of Christ to respond with faith and courage. We seek Jesus's support so that we may respond with truth and love.

At Calvary, our Lord gave Himself completely for the salvation of the world. His sacrifice reveals the supreme fragrance of Divine Love: a Love that does not abandon humankind, even in the darkest hour.

When we unite our sacrifices with Christ, our ordinary trials can become occasions of grace. We may never know how greatly our perseverance, prayer, or quiet faithfulness will encourage another soul.

Let us therefore ask Christ to make even our trials fruitful, so that suffering may not harden our hearts but deepen our compassion.

Fragrance of Mary and the Saints

The Blessed Virgin Mary shows us what happens when a human life is wholly receptive to the grace of God.

Her humble response, “Let it be done to me according to Your Word,” (Luke 1:38), expresses a heart entirely open to the Divine Will. Her life was marked by faith and purity of intention. Her example was marked by obedience and maternal charity. The fragrance of Mary's holy life rose like incense, through her unwavering fidelity to her Son.

Mary does not draw us away from Christ; she leads us towards Him. Her holiness is entirely dependent upon the Grace of God, and her example teaches us how to receive that grace with humility and love.

At the Visitation, Mary carries Christ to Elizabeth, and her arrival becomes an occasion of joy and blessing (Luke 1:39-45). We, too, are called to carry Christ into the lives of others - not by imposing ourselves upon them, but through the witness of a life shaped by His Presence.

The saints offer us further examples of this spiritual fragrance. Their circumstances differed, and their gifts were varied. Their paths to holiness were unique. Yet their lives shared a common source: their love for God and their willingness to respond to His Grace.

Their sanctity continues to inspire the Church because the fragrance of a life given to God does not end with death. Their witness continues to encourage those who seek to follow Christ.

May Mother Mary intercede for us, and may the saints teach us to persevere in the daily pursuit of holiness.

Becoming the fragrance of Christ in the world

Our world does not need Christians who merely speak about holiness. It needs Christians whose lives make the Love of God tangible.

We cannot control how others respond to us, but we can ask Christ to purify the witness we offer.

In a world marked by hostility, let us carry the fragrance of peace.

In a world marked by selfishness, let us carry the fragrance of generosity.

In a world marked by dishonesty, let us carry the fragrance of integrity.

In a world marked by despair, let us carry the fragrance of Christian hope.

In a world where many feel forgotten, let us carry the fragrance of compassion.

This does not mean compromising the truth or remaining silent in the face of wrongdoing. Authentic holiness unites truth with charity, and courage with humility. True holiness unites conviction with mercy.

Sometimes the most powerful testimony is a word spoken with kindness, when anger would be easier. Sometimes it is the refusal to participate in gossip or dishonesty. Sometimes it is the courage to acknowledge a mistake and seek forgiveness.

Every day offers us opportunities to allow Christ to work through us.

We should also remember that sanctity is not achieved in a single moment. It is cultivated through daily prayer and participation in the sacraments. It is facilitated through repentance and fidelity to God's commandments. It is cultivated through works of mercy and perseverance in grace.

When we fall, we must not despair. We return to Christ, seek His Forgiveness, and begin again.

The fragrance of sanctity is not the fragrance of human perfection. It is the fragrance of a life continually being renewed by Divine Mercy.

Prayer for the perfume of sanctity

Let us now turn our hearts to Christ and make this prayer our own.

Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Holy One of God, the Source of every grace and the perfect revelation of the Father's Love.

We ask You to make our lives fragrant with the perfume of sanctity.

Purify our hearts and sanctify our intentions. Transform our thoughts, words, and actions. Remove from us whatever obscures Your Presence. Teach us to love without selfishness, and to forgive without bitterness. Guide us to serve without seeking recognition, and to persevere without losing hope.

May our words bring comfort to the sorrowful. May our actions offer assistance to those in need. May our presence bring peace to those who are troubled.

Make our homes places of charity, and our work an offering of faithful service. May our daily lives be a testimony to Your Grace.

When we are tempted to pride, teach us humility. When we are tempted to anger, teach us patience. When we are tempted to indifference, awaken our compassion. When we grow weary, renew our strength through Your Love.

Through the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, help us to receive Your Grace faithfully, and to carry Your Presence wherever we go.

May the fragrance of our lives rise as an offering of praise to the Father. May those who encounter us discover the perfume of the effects of Your Goodness in our lives. May those who encounter us discern the fragrance of the transforming power of Your Mercy in our lives.

When our earthly pilgrimage is complete, may we be received into the eternal joy of Your Kingdom, where holiness is perfected and love never fades.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, sanctify us.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

May our lives be fragrant with the perfume of sanctity, now and forever. Amen.

Master Perfumer of souls

Prayer to Christ for Perfume of Sanctity

O Christ, dear Master, may Your Grace impart
Sweet fragrance of holiness within my heart;
In Your sacred atelier, let me sit near,
And watch as You fashion the virtues most dear.

You gather roses of charity bright,
Lilies of kindness, washed in Your light;
Rare blossoms of patience, of mercy, of grace,
You blend with such love in this still, holy place.

The violet of meekness, hyssop of prayer,
Blossoms of kindness, fragrance of care;
Sweetness of courage, forgiveness of balm,
Flowers of hope and humbleness calm.

O Master Perfumer, so skilful and wise,
What beautiful fragrance beneath Your Hands lies!
You know every soul, every wound, every need,
And choose just the virtues that help each succeed.

For each life You fashion a fragrance unique,
Perfume of holiness, gentle and meek;
With love and truth, steadfast and true,
Fragrance that draws others closer to You.

Teach me to sit in Your workshop of grace,
Yield You my heart in this quietest place;
Let nothing within me resist Your design,
But make every fibre of my being Your shrine.

Outside, in the city, the streetlamps aglow,
Lights in the windows like scattered stars show;
People move onward through market and street,
With burdens to carry and strangers to meet.

They know not the workshop where grace has begun,
Nor see how Your fragrance is formed, O God's Son;
Yet out in the marketplace, day after day,
Your perfume may touch them along life's hard way.

For sanctity sounds not a trumpet's loud blast,
Nor seeks the applause of a crowd gathered fast;
It blossoms in gestures so little, so slight,
Yet changes a life with its fragrance of light.

Where mercy blooms gently, and judgements depart,
Where patience flows kindly from compassionate heart;
Where gentleness answers where harshness might fall,
And care welcomes those who feel shunned by all.

Small acts of grace, which the world may pass by,
Are as flowers that bloom where Your Love dwells on high;
Each kindness, each mercy, each word that makes whole,
Is Your holy fragrance at work in the soul.

O Jesus, dear Master, Perfumer Divine,
Make virtues like blossoms take root and entwine.
Blend patience with courage, let gentleness grow,
Teach me the beauty of love's quiet flow.

May others discern kindly goodness in me,
Your influence in the person I strive to be.
May souls be encouraged, with hope born anew,
As they glimpse, through my life, the beauty of You.

When evening descends and my day's work is done,
When the last rays of gold fade beneath setting sun,
May the fragrance remaining, wherever I trod,
Be the fragrance of Christ, drawing hearts close to God.

O Master of souls, let Your work be complete;
Make my life an offering, fragrant and sweet.
Till heaven receives me, my prayer shall remain:
Make my life, Lord Jesus, Your perfume again.
